Icon 2004 -- Science Fiction, Fantasy and Role-Playing Festival
Tel Aviv Cinematheque 3-5 October
Icon 2004 is the 8th annual celebration of science fiction, fantasy and role playing enthusiasts in Israel. The festival is held yearly during the Sukkoth Holiday in the Tel Aviv Cinematheque. This year the festival will be hosting highly acclaimed Canadian fantasy author Guy Gavriel Kay.
The festival's theme this year will be "Life and Death", an ever-relevant topic that is at the heart of some of the best works of the genre.
The festival is produced in conjunction with the Tel Aviv municipality and the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, and is organized by 3 volunteer-based non-profit organizations: The Israeli Society for Science Fiction and Fantasy, Starbase 972 -- The Israeli Star Trek Fan Club, and the Israeli Role-Playing Association.
The highlight of the festival will be the arrival of noted fantasy author Guy Gavriel Kay. Kay is the winner of the Aurura award, and his work is highly acclaimed by fans and critics alike. Kay is considered the torch bearer for the Tolkien-inspired fantasy writing; it is only fitting that Kay's work in the genre started right at that point, as one of the editors of The Silmarillion, part of the body of work of Tolkien's Middle-Earth saga. Many of Kay's works were translated to Hebrew, and many Israeli fans are thrilled at his arrival.
Kay will attend various events during the festival, among them the opening ceremony, two lectures, a panel about his work, a Q&A session with the audience, and of course a book signing.
The opening event will take place on 3 October, Sunday, 18:30 in the Tel Aviv Cinemathque.
