Starbase 972 was established in 1998 in order to give a home to the entire community of Star Trek watchers and fans in Israel. Star Trek has been stirring the imagination of million of viewers for the last four decades, as one of the most important shows in television history, and the phenomenon has not skipped Israel. Star Trek is unique in being more than a science fiction show -- it is a series that deals with the essence of being and the human condition, and addresses social, moral, philosophical and scientific questions with an educational orientation. Since its establishment the Club has organized various types of events -- from local gatherings and screenings of Star Trek episodes in universities, through national-level events such as movie premieres, to co-organizing the yearly ICon festival. The Club also publishes a tri-monthly fanzine for its members and operates a website.
In the last few years, due to internal demands, the Club has expanded its interests: though Star Trek is still the core, Babylon 5, Stargate, the Transformers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and various other science-fiction related fandoms and areas of interest have been introduced in the varied projects being organized for the Club’s members and for the entire Israeli science fiction community.
